Last updated 28 October 2026
Carbello is a food diary, so what you log is personal. This page explains, in plain English, what happens to your information today.
What we store, and where
- Your diary, goals, weights, favourites and own foods are saved in your web browser on your device. They are not sent to Carbello’s servers.
- Your shop basket is also saved only in your browser.
- If you clear your browser data, these are deleted. Use More → Download a backup to keep a copy.
Email sign-up
If you sign up for updates, we keep your email address and the date you signed up on Carbello’s server in the UK. We use it only to email you about Carbello (for example when accounts launch) and never sell or share it. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or email hello@carbello.co.uk and we’ll delete it. We keep it until you unsubscribe.
Corrections you make
If you fix a product’s numbers from the pack, your correction is saved in your browser with the rest of your diary. It isn’t sent anywhere unless you choose to correct the public Open Food Facts record yourself.
Food searches and barcodes
When you search for a food or scan a barcode, the search words or barcode number pass through Carbello’s server to Open Food Facts, a public food database, to fetch product details. Results may be cached briefly to keep the service fast. Nothing that identifies you is attached to these searches.
Camera
The barcode scanner uses your camera only while the scanner is open, and only on your device. Images are not uploaded or stored.
Cookies and tracking
Carbello does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Browser storage is used only to make the app work (your diary and basket), which does not need consent under UK rules for strictly necessary storage.
Partners
Partner and sponsored offers are always labelled. Partners never receive your diary, weight or goals.
Accounts (coming soon)
When accounts and cloud sync arrive, this page will be updated before they go live to explain what is stored, where (UK/EU servers), how long for, and how to download or delete it.
Your rights and contact
Under UK GDPR you can ask what information we hold about you (for most people, at most an email address) and ask us to delete it. Because your diary currently lives on your device, you can delete it yourself at any time in More → Delete all my data. For anything else, email hello@carbello.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
